“Spills”…The Latest From Charles Moret
About the music
Charles Moret is no stranger to the music scene. With two albums and multiple EPs/singles within his discography, he is clearly well-versed in all aspects of the indie-pop scene. Moret is vocal about his experiences growing up in Venice, California and following his passion for music from a young age. Moret began releasing his music on Spotify and similar platforms in 2020. Singles such as “For the Night” and “Cocaine Eyes” remain foundations on his discography. One thing I appreciate about Moret’s music is the diversity he utilizes on each track. Some songs feature more calm piano ballads, while others have more of that indie-pop feel. Artists, like Moret, who have the talent of diversifying their music undoubtedly do a great job of keeping the fans engaged and the fanbase growing.
Charle’s freshman album, Spills, released on May 11th, 2026. Spills features seven tracks with a twenty three minute running time. Similar to Charles’ discography each song on the album is unique, but constants are present in terms of themes covered and genres of indie-pop/alternative. The title track “Spills” remains a foundation on the album as it begins to describe the recurring theme of what it’s like to live in California. This song in particular effectively evokes emotion that is set within the album’s tone. This emotion is predominantly seen within the song’s melancholic piano ballot coupled with lyrics that tackle complex topics, such as sense-of-place and the struggle of division caused by inequality.
The main verse of “Spills” is as follows:
I see L.E.D’s on the tents
It cut a face and she glowed
Ritz lights danced upon their backs
Those be the ones who take you out
Moret does an excellent job at utilizing imagery within Spills in its entirety, but this specific verse has been sticking with me. The verse effectively demonstrates the challenges seen in terms of inequality and classes, presumably about the area surrounding Venice and Los Angeles. To me, “L.E.Ds on the tents” is referring to the potential passing through at night of a part of town in which individuals are living in tents. “Ritz lights danced upon their backs” represents the contradiction of other individuals living lavish and potentially more privileged lifestyles. Knowing that this track, and the album as a whole, aims to discuss themes similar to present disparities, whether it be in regards to class or otherwise.
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for new music to explore by a relatable artist, I would absolutely recommend you check out Spills by Charles Moret. Due to the fact that the album has a run time of twenty three minutes, you have the opportunity to listen more frequently and in depth to each track. Not only is Spills a great listen musically, but it covers several important themes that are very much worth discussing.
